Nightwatch

Sitting on the porch of a warm southern evening
Lavender wisps of clouds breathing
Drifts of Venezuelan tobacco
Wild cats hiding yet
Echoes of the ancient panther

Street lamps illuminating new palm fronds
Red and green gliding airplane lights
Snippets of cricket conversation

Tacita shots of Cuban coffee
White lechoso moths flutter drawing
in circles beneath the moon
Colors of sky ranging
from tenuous aqua to navy blue

The bird house feeders peaceful
and quiet now as Dan next door
comes out to water flowers in the dark

Miniature glass hummingbird
shimmering amidst
shadows of resurrection ferns

Glowing ghosts of sea shells
Mesquite smoke
and tequila spoken
Silhouettes of lizards
catch insects
on the window of eternal night
